John Wesley Work papers.

The John Wesley Work papers consist of a speech, photographs, glass plate negatives, holograph manuscript, and memorabilia, all undated. The speech is in both holograph and typescript carbon form and pays tribute to Joel Chandler Harris, Howard Weeden, and discusses the characteristics of "Negro" folk songs and spirituals. Photographs, made from glass plate negatives, are of a woman and child and a woman and three children. There is no identification, but they may depict John Wesley Work as a child with his mother Samuella Boyd Work. The holograph manuscript is an apparently unpublished work authored by Work entitled "Comrades, or Friends at Fisk." Work was professor of history and Latin at Fisk (1904-1923?). The memorabilia item ia a calendar from Fisk.
